Day 01 PROME (EMBARKATION)

We will meet you at the hotel of Sule Shangri – La, Yangon at 7:00am for a transfer to Prome.

Arrive at the destination at around 2:00pm.

This place used to be controlled by the Mon tribe during the Bagan Era. Hence, in 1754, the Burmese King Alaungpaya came and dominated there. After that, Prome (or Pyay) was attacked along with the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company in the 1890s. Although having the turbulent past, the city now develops fast as a major ports of Myanmar transporting goods between the North and the South.

Next, we pay a visit to Thayekhittaya (or Sri Ksetra, meaning “Fabulous City” in the Pali language). From the 5th to the 9th century, this city was the kingdom of the Pyu. If you are looking for real antiques, go to Sri Ksetra Museum where preserves many precious artifacts from the ancient time including Hindu deities, 6th century Buddha statues, beads and silver coins.

A welcome party and a safety briefing will take place on board from 6:30PM to 7:30PM.

Day 02 THAYET

Under the soft and sweet morning sunshine, we take a tuk- tuk to get to the beautiful town of Thayet Myo. Here, you will have a chance to visit the oldest golf course in Myanmar, and have chance to learn about its history. After that, we move to the local market and pass some colonial constructions before returning to the ship and carrying on sailing. 

During the cruising time, a BBC Documentary named “The Life of the Buddha” will be shown.

Day 03 MAGWE

This morning, we promise an interesting tour in Magwe by trishaw – a special kind of bicycle with three wheeled. First, we stop by a local market where you can find a lot of unique souvenirs, best ideas for gifts. After a short break, guests will be more interested in visiting Mya Tha Lun pagoda as we ride through the city. This site sets on the top of Naguttama hill offering the spectacular view over the surrounding area. 

Today, our entertainments on board includes Longyi and Thanaka Demonstration. 

Day 04 SALAY (DISEMBARKATION)

After breakfast, around 8:00am, we will get off the ship at Salay

Day 01 MANDALAY/AMARAPURA (L/D)

At noon, embark the ship. Enjoy our delicious lunch on board.

In the afternoon, we take a tour in Mandalay, including the Kuthodaw Pagoda preserving the world’s largest book, and the Shwe Nan Daw Kyaung Monastery which is the only original monastery dated back to the royal era. We continue to Mandalay Hill where we come to the top and enjoy the entire view of the city and the temples. Near the late morning, we visit the gold-leaf workshop to see how gold-leaf made and used throughout Burma’s temples, typically the Mahamuni Pagoda.

Day 02 MINGUN - AMARAPURA (B/L/D)

MORNING EXCURSION: Mingun Walking Tour

After our breakfast, we take a tour around the lovely town of Mingun. Firstly, we visit King Bodawpaya’s monumental, uncompleted stupa. It is said that during construction, an astrologer insisted that the king would die if the temple completed. And so the construction was stopped, if not for that, this would have been the world’s largest. Our next destination is the Mingun Bell where the world’s largest working bell being kept until the year of 2000 when the Bell of Good Luck discovered in Henan, China. Afterwards, we go shopping in the local market well known for the galleries showcasing arts from locally and internationally known artists.

AFTERNOON EXCURSION: Amarapura

In the afternoon, we take a coach to Amarapura, once Burma’s capital. The first drop is a silk weaving workshop, and later U Bein Bridge, one of the most famous tourist attractions in Burma. Considered the longest teakwood bridge in the world, U Bein Bridge offers us great view of the surrounding, especially under majestic sunset. A tour around lake on board will give us a chance to explore such a stun over the bridge.

Enjoy Myanmar Traditional Dance Performance from 9:30PM to 10:30PM.

Day 03 SAGAING - AVA (B/L/D)

MORNING EXCURSION: Sagaing and Ava. 

Our first stop in the morning is Sagaing, the former capital with plethora of pagodas along landscapes. After touring around by coach, we take time to visit Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda atop Sagaing Hill to enjoy the stunning panoramic view of Irrawaddy River and its surrounding beauty. Later, we are off to a Nunnery, before heading next to another former kingdom, Ava. A horse cart is our means of transport here as we go around and pay a visit to Bagaya Kyaung Monastery, Nanmyin Watchtower and final Yanada Hsemee Pagoda complex.

Day 04 YANDABO - HNAW GONE VILLAGE (B/L/D)

MORNING EXCURSION: Yandabo Walking Tour

Yandabo is attractive for its potteries craftsmanship and also its historical aspect. This is where the British Burma and the Royal Burma signed the treaty, nowadays, it is a charming village well known for its potteries. As we walk throughout the village, we can be able to see many workshops with varied styles and markings, and the entire process of making these wonderful potteries. If lucky, we may be able to meet the local schoolers and school’s headmaster.

AFTERNOON EXCURSION: Hnaw Kone Walking Tour

In the afternoon, we cruise to Hnaw Kone village where we take a small walk around the place. Here, we will interact with the friendly locals and lovely children. We also get to see the locals use bamboos to make baskets or large panels for buildings.

Day 05 BAGAN (B/L/D)

MORNING EXCURSION: Bagan viewing tower and Oxcarts ride

In the morning, we have a chance to visit Bagan viewing tower, a idea location to marvel at the panoramic view of the whole landscape. Later on, we embark on a exploration excursion along Bagan’s temples on ceremonial oxcarts.

AFTERNOON EXCURSION: Temples of Bagan 

In the morning, we take on an exploration trip to Burma’s most anticipated site - Bagan. Bagan used to be the Pagan Empire’s centre, nowadays, it is a popular attraction for tourists, artists, and archaeologists. To start the morning, we visit the famous Htilominlo, fabled to be built by King Htilominlo on the site where he was chosen for the crown. Moving on, we come to Ananda which is the most well-known temples in Bagan. It was built during the reign of King Kyanzittha, 1105 CE, and being one of the four temples lasted even now from that time. To end the morning, we visit Bagan’s biggest temple - Dhammayangi, built in 12th century by King Narathu as atonement for his sins. We may also get to see sandpainting by local artist.

Day 06 BAGAN (B/L/D)

MORNING EXCURSION: Markets and Temples of Bagan 

In the morning, we travel to the largest open market of Bagan via coach. This is where fresh products, spices, meats, longyis, woodcarvings, thanaka, and rattan products traded each day. After the market section, we visit  Shwezigon Pagoda which is the one of most important spiritual monuments. Resides on the center of the pagoda is the golden stupa said to preserve a tooth and bone relic of the Buddha, Anawrahta’s golden image and a emerald Buddha. Afterwards, we back to the Irrawaddy Explorer and ready to set sail.

AFTERNOON EXCURSION: The Art and Sunset Over Bagan 

Our first highlight in the afternoon is local workshop of making lacquerware, one of the most long-rooted traditional handcraft in Burma. After enjoying the artistic and skillful process of lacquerware production, we take time to shop around, before heading to other attractions. Next stop is Gubyaukgyi Temple with outstanding paintings dated back to early 12th century. A demonstration of making sand painting- a traditional art of Myanmar is also displayed for your enjoyment. Nearby is Myazedi Stupa for your visit. This place plays a linguistic and historical play in Burma’s culture and is said to set up vital influence on Pagan. To round off the day, we take time to climb up Bagan Viewing Hill and toast the sunset, before getting back on board.

Day 07 SALAY (B/L/D)

MORNING EXCURSION: Salay Walking Tour 

In the morning, we visit the small town of Salay, established in the 13th century with shrines from Bagan Era, impressive teak monastery in 19th century, and colonial buildings. We start the tour with Salay House which is a colonial trading company warehouse in 1906 on the Irrawaddy’s bank. Next, we walk along the Strand Street to the local market, and then to the gorgeous wooden monastery of Yoke Soun Kyaung Taw Gyi. The monastery’design follows the style of the Crown Prince House in Mandalay. Now it is a museum showcasing spectacular woodcarvings and relics. As we move on, we will encounter several monuments dated back to Bagan Era. Afterwards, we travel to Mann Paya well known for its splendid lacquerware Buddha, then we back to Irrawaddy Explorer and take a small walk along with many colonial buildings in Salay.

MORNING EXCURSION: Magwe 

In the morning, we travel to Magwe city via trishaws. We will take a tour throughout the city, including the local market. After the tour, we come to Mya Tha Lun Pagoda - a dazzling gilded stupa located on top of Naguttama Hill. From here, we can enjoy the fantastic sights of the entire area and the river.

Day 09 THAYET - PROME - SRI KSETRA (B/L/D)

MORNING EXCURSION: Thayet Myo 

In the morning, we take a trip to the lovely town of Thayet Myo via local horsecarts. Firstly we will arrive at Burma’s oldest golf course dated back to the British colonial period. After that, we back to our horsecarts and move on to the local market. As we ride, we will pass by some colonial buildings and houses built since the British colonial period. Afterwards, we back to the Irrawaddy Explorer and spend the afternoon sailing.

AFTERNOON EXCURSION: Pyay and Sri Ksetra

Day 10 PROME(PYAY) - YANGON (B)

In the morning, we enjoy our last breakfast on Irrawaddy Explorer, then we disembark from the cruise around 7:00 AM and get transferred to Yangon via coach.

Our first stop is Htilominlo, built by King Htilominlo at the exact location of him being selected to be Pagan’s crown prince. Once decorated with murals, the building now remains with plaster carvings. Afterwards, we are off to one of the most famous attractions in Bagan, Ananda, one of the 4 remainders from King Kyanzittha’s kingdom. The highlight of this temple is its four standing Buddhas facing four directions.

Day 06 BAGAN - HNAW GONE (B/L/D)

MORNING EXCURSION: Markets and Temples of Bagan 

In the morning, we travel to the largest open market of Bagan via coach. This is where fresh products, spices, meats, longyis, woodcarvings, thanaka, and rattan products traded each day. After the market section, we visit  Shwezigon Pagoda which is the one of most important spiritual monuments. Resides on the center of the pagoda is the golden stupa said to preserve a tooth and bone relic of the Buddha, Anawrahta’s golden image and a emerald Buddha. Afterwards, we back to the Irrawaddy Explorer and ready to set sail.

AFTERNOON EXCURSION: Hnaw Kone Walking Tour

In the afternoon, we cruise to Hnaw Kone village where we take a small walk around the place. Here, we will interact with the friendly locals and lovely children. We also get to see the locals use bamboos to make baskets or large panels for buildings. 

Take part in cookery class aboard Irrawaddy Explorer as our reowned chef will show you how to make tea leaf and ginger salad (2:00PM-3:00PM)

Day 07 YANDABO (B/L/D)

MORNING EXCURSION: Yandabo Walking Tour

Yandabo is attractive for its potteries craftsmanship and also its historical aspect. This is where the British Burma and the Royal Burma signed the treaty, nowadays, it is a charming village well known for its potteries. As we walk throughout the village, we can be able to see many workshops with varied styles and markings, and the entire process of making these wonderful potteries. If lucky, we may be able to meet the local schoolers and school’s headmaster.

Enjoy the afternoon entertainments with the lecture of “Myanmar: Past and Today” (3:30PM-4:30PM) and Burmese Karaoke Party (5:30PM-7:00PM)

Day 08 AVA - SAGAING - AMARAPURA (B/L/D)

FULL DAY EXCURSION: Ava and Sagaing

Travelling by horse cart, we spend our morning paying a visit to Ava township, in which the highlights being Bagaya Kyaung Monastery, Nanmyin watch tower and the Yadana Hsemeee Pagoda complex. Later on, we leave Ava for Sagaing by coach. Among various temples and pagodas, Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda atop Sagaing Hill is our stop. From the summit, we can marvel at the whole view of Irrawaddy and Mandalay landscape. A Nunnery’s visit rounds off the morning excursion.

AFTERNOON EXCURSION: Amarapura

In the afternoon, we take a coach to Amarapura, once Burma’s capital. The first drop is a silk weaving workshop, and later U Bein Bridge, one of the most famous tourist attractions in Burma. Considered the longest teakwood bridge in the world, U Bein Bridge offers us great view of the surrounding, especially under majestic sunset. A tour around lake on board will give us a chance to explore such a stun over the bridge.

Day 09 MINGUN-MANDALAY (B/L/D)

MORNING EXCURSION: Mingun Walking Tour

After the lunch, we take a tour around the lovely town of Mingun. Firstly, we visit King Bodawpaya’s monumental, uncompleted stupa. It is said that during construction, an astrologer insisted that the king would die if the temple completed. And so the construction was stopped, if not for that, this would have been the world’s largest. Our next destination is the Mingun Bell where the world’s largest working bell being kept until the year of 2000 when the Bell of Good Luck discovered in Henan, China. Afterwards, we go shopping in the local market well known for the galleries showcasing arts from locally and internationally known artists.

AFTERNOON EXCURSION: Mandalay

In the afternoon, our first visit is Kuthodaw Pagoda, famous for its possession of 729 Buddhist canon inscribed marble slabs- the world’s biggest book collection. Next we are off to Shwe Nan Daw Kyaung Monastery, the only remainder from royal time. Gold leaf production workshop makes our next visit, where we have a chance to enjoy the process of creating thin gold layer applied on Buddha statues across Myanmar. Our last stop is Mahamuni Pagoda.

Day 01 Mandalay - Mingun (L/D)

Around 10:00 – 12:00 AM, we get on the cruise at Gawein pier and have welcoming cocktail in the saloon, then we cruise upstream to Mingun. Here, we take a trip around the massive, yet unfinished Mingun Pagoda, the Mingun Bell – the world’s biggest working bell to date, and the Mingun Old People’s Home. 

We have dinner and stay the night on cruise, also enjoy theatre and dance performance on the sundeck.

Day 02 Mandalay - Ava - Amarapura (B/L/D)

We take an exploration trip around Mandalay centre, including Mahamuni Pagoda, Mandalay Hill which has spiral staircases leading to the paranomic views over the city, nearby temples, and the Kuthodaw Paya preserving the largest book in the world. We also visit various workshops including golf-leaf, tapestry, woodcarving, marble-carving, and bronze-casting workshop.

We have lunch on cruise, then we go to the ancient capital of Burmese Kingdom (1364 – 1841) – Ava via horse cart and visit the gorgeous 200-year-old teak monastery of Bagaya Kyaung, then the 27-meter-height Nanmyin watchtower and the Me Nu Ok Kyaung monastery. Next, we move to the ancient capital of Royal Burmese (1783) - Amarapura and enjoy the sunset at U Bein Bridge. We stay the night at Sagaing.

Day 03 Monywa (B/L/D)

In the early morning, we take a 1.5-hour drive to Monywa via coach. Here, we will have an expedition section at Hpowindaung and Shwebadaung Caves where numerous Buddha statues kept inside along with fantastic paintings which can be traced back from 14th to 18th  century. We have lunch at Win Unity Hotel’s restaurant in Monywa. After that, we get to the magnificient pagoda of Sambuddhai Kat Kyaw preserving approximately 500,000 Buddha images. Later on, we take a 2-hour drive to Myin Mu where we get back onboard. 

We have dinner and stay the night on cruise..

Day 04 Yandabo (B/L/D)

In the morning, we reach Yandabo, well known for both its special potteries craftsmanship and its historical aspect. In 1826, the Royal Burma and British Burma signed the peace treaty of the First Anglo-Burmese War here. We move on to several potteries workshops, the school, and the monastery. 

We keep on cruising downstream. In the afternoon we pass by Shwe Pyi Thar village and take a walk. We stay the night at mid-river.

Day 05 Bagan (B/L/D)

In the early morning, we reach Bagan and spend the day visiting the selection of the 2,000 listed temples and pagodas. We have lunch on cruise, then in the afternoon we explore the the archeological site.

We can choose from other options, such as independent discovery via horse cart/bicycle, or take part in the spectacular Balloon Flight over Bagan (surcharge applied). At noon, we return to the cruise and set sail. We spend most of time sailing upstream. We will pass by Shwe Pyi Thar village to take a walk. We have dinner, then enjoy a puppet show on the sundeck or in the village.

Irrawaddy Explorer Policy

1. River Conditions Warning

The Irrawaddy and Chindwin rivers are subject to seasonal rises and falls of water level. So that an alternative itinerary will be offered to Passenger in the case of water levels being too high or low.

Published itineraries are indication only and subject to sudden change. In such events alternative itineraries will be provided and we do our best to ensure that if a stop is missed we make up for it with another stop.

The ship’s manager and captain are jointly responsible for passengers’ comfort and safety.

Passengers must accept their decisions and instructions.

2. Deposit

To secure the booking a 30% deposit is required at the time of confirmation. The remaining balance will be made 70 days prior departure date.

If a booking is made less than 70 days, full fare payment must be made within 48 hours.

3. Cancellation Terms

The cancellation notice must be received in writing either by e-mail or fax. It will be effective on the date of receipt. Cancellation charges, per person, are based upon the date of cancellation:

Up to 71 days prior to departure: Deposit will be forfeited.

From 70-35 days: 50% of cruise fare

From 34 days to “no show”: 100% of cruise fare

4. Children Policy

Up to 2 years: Complimentary in the parent/guardian’s cabin.

3-12 Years: if the child stays in the cabin with one of the parents/guardians 50% of the twin-sharing rate.

5. Minimum Occupancy

For all departures should the occupancy be less than 10 passengers for Short Discovery Cruise and 12 passengers for Exploration and Discovery Cruises the Company reserves the right to cancel the cruise up to 60 days prior the departure date. A confirmation notice in writing will be released by the company to all booked clients and/or their agents within the deadline. In case of cancellation an alternative cruise will be offered and if not acceptable all down payments will be immediately refunded.

6. Insurance

We strongly advise travelers to purchase trip cancellation insurance. We also highly recommend guests to get international medical, baggage loss and delay insurance in the case of bad situations. Irrawaddy Explorer Cruise will take no responsibility for lost or stolen personal belongings.

This ship is magnificent, with fabulous suites. The staff are friendly and accommodating. Food is OK, but the soups are absolutely great. Itinerary is fascinating, although you have to love Buddhist temples and local markets, which can wear thin.
